ACM has its first General Body Meeting of the semester on Friday, January 19th at 5pm! It will take place in MCH(Carothers) 201. Come out and we’ll discuss our plans for the semester, and talk a little bit more about the organization for all our new members. It will also be a great opportunity to meet fellow students interested in computer science! And if nothing else, come for the free pizza! I hope to see you all there, we have a lot planned this semester.

Almost six months ago, ACM at FSU partnered with DataCamp Donates. DataCamp Donates believes that education is a human right and that everyone should be able to strengthen their data literacy if they wish. They amplify this mission by donating licenses to organizations, like ACM@FSU, which distributes free DataCamp access to students who are otherwise unable to access DataCamp due to various barriers. 

Ever since we distributed our licenses, our group has completed 0ver 50 courses, with over 200 hours of learning. Students have completed courses related to data analysis in various languages, machine learning, and even new courses that delve into the fundamentals of Chat GPT. This has been an amazing opportunity for ACM and it has certainly closed a lot of skill gaps for FSU students looking to enter the workforce.

As we go through the summer semester at FSU, ACM hopes amidst enjoying summer vacation our DataCamp group can continue their data literacy education with ease.

The end of the semester is near, but ACM is not done yet! We have 2 more exciting events between now and the end of April:

– Our next event is on Tuesday, April 18th at 5pm in LOV 353. There is a student presentation by Joshua Kane, who will be giving a presentation on “The code life cycle: The importance of code readability.” Code readability is a topic that is not explicitly taught, and it’s a critical trait to have especially when working in industry. You won’t want to miss this presentation!

– Election season is here! The ACM Officer Elections & Final GBM is Friday, April 21st at LOV 353. The time window for active ACM members to cast their physical ballot is from 4-7pm. During this time, running officers will be giving speeches, and there will be videogames, board games, and free food. This is the perfect opportunity to mingle with ACM members and get to know the running officers before casting your vote. If you are interested in running for an ACM position, you must fill out this form no later than the day before elections: https://forms.gle/FS1QK1VaDjy7uUbw7 If you do not fill out the Google Form, you WILL NOT be able to run in the elections.

– At our last GBM, we promised there would be a Rez day this upcoming weekend. This event has been canceled due to weather concerns. The funds that would have gone to this event will instead be used to buy food for our election/game night.

ACM’s next GBM will be Thursday, April 6th at 5pm in LOV 353. We will be discussing our upcoming events for the remainder of the semester, such as a cookout at the Rez and elections. In addition, we have a presentation by Brian Poblete. Brian will be giving a presentation on “User Experience in CS: Why Every Developer Needs to Know It”. Hope to see you there!

The ACM Spring Programming Contest is coming up soon! The programming contest will be held on Saturday, April 1st. Doors open at 9am and the contest will begin at 10am in the Love building.

For those of you who have not attended before, the Programming Contest is an event where students work solo or in teams to solve programming problems. The contest has an upper and lower division, so whether you’re a freshman or senior, there will be both easy and challenging problems.

There will be FREE PIZZA, prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and best team name, and some CS professors offer EXTRA CREDIT for participating, so make sure to ask your professor!

Also, we are in need of proctors and volunteers for the event. If you volunteer you are still eligible for extra credit and first dibs on free pizza. If you are interested, please email contest@fsu.acm.org.

ACM has multiple events coming up in the next few weeks, so be prepared for some more announcements! This upcoming Friday, March 24th, there will be a virtual presentation by JP Morgan & Chase. A representative from the company will be giving a presentation on the different software engineering programs that they offer. This is a strictly virtual event that will begin at 5pm on Friday. CoastalCloud is a tech consulting company and a representative will be giving a presentation on “How to stand out as an applicant.” CoastalCloud is actively looking for junior analyst interns for the upcoming summer, so this is the perfect opportunity to make a good impression! The presentation will be happening on Tuesday, March 7th at 5pm in LOV 353. Hope to see you there!

There is going to be a presentation by Mason Hagan, and he will be discussing the importance of personal projects, and how you can get started with creating your own.
