We are very excited to announce that we have finally launched our completely new web site. fsu.acm.org will be the central hub for all things ACM, at FSU.
The site was developed over the summer and has been meticulously planned to better serve members for years to come. We put a lot of features in. The site will highlight information in the form of technical blog posts, event updates, and job opportunities (as they hit). We hope this site will help Computer Science students find help and information easier and also improve attendance and participation at ACM events.
The Site Tech
The site is built atop WordPress . WordPress is a CMS framework written in php. We use the default data storage option, a MySQL database to house site data.
Aside from having a solid reputation and a very strong community, WordPress made sense because it’s easy to use and highly extendable thanks to the large selection of available plugins. We use several plugins to make development and maintenance a breeze. We have installed everything from contact form plugins to automated backups. Even our integrated google calendar page is produced by a WP plugin that took only a few minutes to install.
The site is served by ACM. The organization is very generous in that they provide free web hosting options to student chapters.
The Site Design
The theme used was actually a free HTML5 theme which we acquired from HTML5UP. The template is called TXT, and the vast majority of work this summer went into converting it to a WordPress theme.
